Ísey Skyr Chess Festival in Hotel Selfoss
At the 30th year anniversary of Selfoss chess club ( A.k.a. Chess club of Selfoss and the surroundings, SSON), the club will hold an international chess festival in Hotel Selfoss in Selfoss, Iceland from 18th to 29th of november.
The main event of the festival is a round robin tournament with 10 former junior or youth world champions. Among the participants are three Icelandic chess players. Four Icelandic chess players became youth or junior world champion during the years 1977-1994. We are also very pleased to have seven renowned foreign participants that come from six countries in four continents.
Other events in the chess festival include the South Iceland championship, which is an open tournament with over 4000 EUR prize pot (600.000 kr.), the Icelandic Fisher random chess championship (also an open tournament with almost 3000 EUR prize pot), a seminar on the current status of Icelandic chess, arbiter seminar and a European Chess Union School chess teacher training course.

The Municipality of Árborg was established in 1998. It consists of the town Selfoss, villages of Eyrarbakki, Stokkseyri and the Sandvík area. Selfoss, pop. 7.973, is the largest town in South Iceland and the main center of trade and industry. The distance from the capital is 57 km and various options are available for anyone who wants to stay in this friendly town. A number of restaurants and cafés are situated in the heart of Selfoss, along with various kind of shops. The town also has an outdoor swimming pool with sauna and hot tubs. North of Selfoss you will find the recreation forest of Hellisskógur with interesting footpaths alongside Ölfusá River. On the far side bank of that same river you can also find a 9-hole golf course.
